Next year, Disney will release "The Jungle Book," a bold new retelling of the classic Rudyard Kipling story, directed by Jon Favreau and based on a script by Justin Marks. The all-star voice cast getting in touch with their animal side includes Bill Murray (as Baloo), Ben Kingsley (as Bagheera), Idris Elba (as Shere Khan), Scarlett Johansson (as Kaa), Lupita Nyong'o (as Raksha), Christopher Walken (as King Louie) and Giancarlo Esposito (as Akela). While plot specifics have yet to be revealed (the October 9th, 2015 release has only released a handful of behind-the-scenes stills and a cool logo), we were able to get a tantalizing new detail out of Jason Schwartzman, of all people.
We were talking to Schwartzman about his role in this month's Tim Burton movie "Big Eyes," when the conversation swayed to his performance in last year's "Saving Mr. Banks." In that film he portrayed Disney Legend Richard Sherman, who with his brother Robert, penned some of the most distinct songs in the history of Disney – not only songs for movies like the "The Jungle Book" and "Mary Poppies" but also songs for rides and attractions like it's a small world and the Carousel of Progress (both of which debuted at the 1964 World's Fair in Queens).
When asked if he kept up with Sherman, Schwartzman said that he's insanely busy – and one of the things he's working on is "The Jungle Book." When we asked specifically if he was working on Favreau's film, Schwartzman hastily said, "He's working on everything." But you heard it here first: Richard Sherman will be providing new songs to "The Jungle Book," meaning it will very much maintain its musical DNA from the original 1967 animated classic. Yessssssss.
