After the ever-so-polite talking bear travels from the Peruvian jungle, he finds himself alone and homeless in London's Paddington Station. He's adopted by a human family (Hugh Bonneville, Sally Hawkins) while he tries to stay safe and find the British explorer who invited him to London in the first place.
Why We're Excited: "Paddington" is the most expensive movie ever produced by French production company StudioCanal, and while the $55 million budget is middling by Hollywood standards, it produced a film that won rave reviews upon its UK opening in late November. For every child (or former child) who's ever enjoyed the tale of the bear who so loved marmalade, Paddington should prove a treat.
'The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water' (February 6, 2015)What It's About: After Burger Beard the Pirate (Antonio Banderas) opens a magical book that makes his evil plans come true, he makes off with the highly coveted Krabby Patty formula and threatens the entire undersea village of Bikini Bottom. Its most famous resident, SpongeBob (Tom Kenny) and his pals head to the surface and take on superhero personas to take on the greatest threat they've ever faced.
Why We're Excited: Since 1999, the absurd and silly antics of everyone's favorite undersea fry-cook have entertained fans of all ages. It's now been more than a decade since the first SpongeBob movie, and we're ready for another full-length adventure featuring the Bikini Bottom crowd. Plus, Banderas makes for a perfect villain. Adding to the anticipation, SpongeBob creator and former show-runner Stephen Hillenburg has returned to write the script.
'Cinderella' (March 13, 2015)What It's About: Disney's live-action remake of its 1950 classic features a plot and characters that largely mirror the animated tale that helped turn Disney into the unstoppable entertainment powerhouse it is today. In a reversal of roles, Cate Blanchett co-stars as the stepmother that sends Ella into the ashes, and Helena Bonham Carter is the fairy godmother who dusts her off and sends her toward her prince.
Why We're Excited: Who doesn't love a Disney retelling? And where else can we see so many British stars all at once? The movie stars Lily James, who appears as free-spirited Lady Rose on PBS's "Downton Abbey." Her prince is hunky Richard Madden, best known as Robb Stark on HBO's "Game of Thrones." Behind the camera, Kenneth Branagh continues burnishing his mainstream directing credits. After gaining fame as a latter-day Laurence Olivier by starring in and directing Shakespeare film adaptations, Branagh has more recently helmed action films such as 2007's "Thor" and last year's "Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit."
'Home' (March 27, 2015)What It's About: After the alien Boov invade Earth to escape from their own intergalactic enemies, they become the planet's new benevolent overlords and begin relocating humans. One stubborn human girl, however (voiced by Rihanna), escapes and hits the road with a Boov outcast (Jim Parsons). Together, they have to save the planet from the evil Gorg.
Why We're Excited: Any movie starring Rihanna, multiple Emmy winner Jim Parsons ("Big Bang Theory"), and Steve Martin promises big laughs. And "Home" is the latest big-budget, 3-D offering from DreamWorks Animation, the studio responsible for "How to Train Your Dragon," which director Tim Johnson executive produced, "Shrek," and "Madagascar." The studio rescheduled the release of "Home" from Thanksgiving 2014 to the less crowded spring 2015, making this film a focus of family entertainment in March.
'Avengers: Age of Ultron' (May 1, 2015)What It's About: After the events of "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" left super-secret spy agency (and superhero management unit) S.H.I.E.L.D. in disarray, Ironman, Thor, Captain America, the Hulk, Black Widow, and Hawkeye reassemble as the Avengers to battle an artificial intelligence entity intent on destroying humanity.
Why We're Excited: As the sequel to the third-highest grossing film of all time, and the eleventh film in the Marvel comics film universe, "Age of Ultron," naturally has the entire galaxy pulsing with anticipation. Fanboy favorite Joss Whedon, director of the first "Avengers" again directs, and also penned the script. We wouldn't be surprised if the sequel surpassed the original at the box office – taking aim at James Cameron's Titanic hold on No. 2.
'Tomorrowland' (May 22, 2015)What It's About: Long aged out of his renown as a boy genius, inventor Frank (George Clooney), leads a brilliant, curious teen girl (Britt Robertson, who recently appeared on CBS's "Under the Dome") to a place outside of regular time and space, from which they embark on a dangerous mission to save the planet.
Why We're Excited: In 2005, Brad Bird won an Oscar for directing "The Incredibles" and was also nominated for its script. In 2008, he won another Oscar for directing "Ratatouille" and was again nominated for that script. Now recognized as one of the best storytellers in the business, Bird teamed up with "Lost" writer and co-creator Damon Lindelof to write Tomorrowland, his second live-action feature (his first was the well received "Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol"). With Bird at the helm and Clooney on the screen, "Tomorrowland" promises to be a must-see sci-fi film for the entire family.
'Jurassic World' (June 12, 2015)What It's About: Two decades after the events of "Jurassic Park," in which everything that could go wrong on an island teeming with cloned dinosaurs did, Jurassic World has opened to tourists, according to the original vision of park founder John Hammond. But soon, the multinational corporation running the island creates a toothier, genetically modified tourist attraction that once again leads to reptilian mayhem.
Why We're Excited: It'll be 22 years since Steven Spielberg amazed moviegoers with a brachiosaurus lumbering across a tropical plain, and 14 years since another director underwhelmed audiences that had grown blase about dinosaur CGI and recycled plots in "Jurassic Park III." The passage of time and advances in special effects technology provides new visual wonders and a fresh set of adventures (including rumors of trained T-Rexes) to fascinate a new generation of dinosaur fans.
'Inside Out' (June 19, 2015)What It's About: After Riley, a young girl, has to move from the Midwest to San Francisco, her emotions become hard to handle. While that's usually an invisible struggle, Pixar shows us the denizens of Riley's emotional HQ: Joy (voiced by Amy Poehler), Anger (Lewis Black), Sadness (Phyllis Smith), Fear (Bill Hader), and Disgust (Mindy Kaling). When Joy and Sadness get lost, the other emotions take over, leaving Riley on the brink of emotional chaos.
Why We're Excited: Who isn't excited to see the latest from peerless animation studio Pixar? If Pixar does one thing better than all its competitors, it's creating a film that entrances kids while moving adults – even those without children (example one: the wordless sequence of Carl and Ellie's married life in "Up.") Here, we not only feel the emotions, we see them, and also hear them voiced by some of the funniest actors working today.
'Minions' (July 10, 2015)What It's About: A spin-off and prequel to the "Despicable Me" films, "Minions" traces the evolution of the yellow, pill-shaped henchmen as they serve (and inadvertently undermine) the most despicable supervillains throughout history, from a T-Rex to Dracula. By the 20th Century, the minions compete for the attention of a new villain, Scarlett Overkill (Sandra Bullock).
Why We're Excited: The minions have been the breakout stars of the "Despicable Me" franchise since the original came out in 2010, grossing more than $250 million and spawning the even more successful sequel, which grossed an astronomical $368 million in 2013. With this third film, we – like Universal – expect another crowd-pleaser now that the minions are carrying their own Gru-less movie.
'Pan' (July 17, 2015)What It's About: "Pan" is a live-action origin story for Peter Pan and Captain Hook. Set during World War II, the movie features an orphan (played by newcomer Levi Miller) who is kidnapped by pirates and taken to Neverland, where he must save the land from the deadly pirate Blackbeard (Hugh Jackman).
Why We're Excited: NBC's recent live performance of Peter Pan boasted strong ratings (despite the reviews), demonstrating viewers' continued fascination with the boy who wouldn't grow up. This lush, vivid (and non-musical) retelling invites viewers to imagine the origins of Peter Pan and Captain Hook in the grasp of mustache-twirling bad guy Blackbeard.
'The Jungle Book' (October 9, 2015)What It's About: A live-action reboot of Disney's 1967 classic. Newcomer Neel Sethi stars as Mogwli. All the other characters are CGI, motion-capture creations. They include Idris Elba as Shere Khan, Scarlett Johansson as Kaa, Lupita Nyong'o as Raksha, Sir Ben Kingsley as Bagheera, Christopher Walken as King Louie, and Bill Murray as Baloo.
Why We're Excited: The A-list, international cast is "The Jungle Book's" biggest draw: three Oscar winners and comedy legend Bill Murray lend their voices to the production. Disney's animated original entertained generations, and the talents in this outing (led by director Jon Favreau) are likely to do the same.
'Peanuts' (November 6, 2015)What It's About: A computer-animated 3-D feature starring the beloved characters of the Peanuts comic strip. Indefatigable Charlie Brown sets off on an epic quest while Snoopy the beagle – and doghouse flying ace – embarks upon his own mission to take down his arch nemesis, The Red Baron.
Why We're Excited: For many Americans, the fall and winter holidays aren't complete without a helping or two of the Peanuts gang. Whether waiting in a pumpkin patch or clustered around the world's saddest Christmas tree, Charlie Brown, Linus, Lucy, Snoopy remind us all of the sweetness of innocence and youth. With the son and grandson of Peanuts creator Charles Schulz lovingly shepherding this project to completion, we're looking forward to a Thanksgiving with a new Peanuts chapter to add to our collection.
'The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2' (Nov. 20, 2015)What It's About: The fourth and final film adapted from the "Hunger Games" trilogy of books has rebel hero Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) making a final assault on the Capitol, which had been ruling over post-apocalyptic Panem through brutality, fear, and the annual Hunger Games tournament. Oh, and she must deal with a radically different version of her beloved Peeta (Josh Hutcherson).
Why We're Excited: "The Hunger Games" has been one of the most successful adaptations of young adult literature in movie history, and for fans of the Suzanne Collins' books, "Mockingjay – Part 2" promises the visual payoff they've been waiting for years to see. Those who haven't read the books should prepare for the heartbreak and violence of all-out war.
'The Good Dinosaur' (Nov. 25, 2015)What It's About: "The Good Dinosaur" imagines a world where a comet never wiped out dinosaurs 65 million years ago and where a 70-foot-tall teenaged apatosaurus named Arlo, who doesn't quite fit in with modern sauropod civilization, can set off on a quest with a tiny human boy named Spot.
Why We're Excited: After 2014 came and went with no Pixar releases, "The Good Dinosaur" will be the studio's second feature in 2015. We're always excited for Pixar releases, but we're especially hopeful that by heading back to the drawing board (the movie was pushed back after the studio changed directors), "The Good Dinosaur" lives up to the Pixar reputation.
'Star Wars: Episode VII' (Dec. 18, 2015)What It's About: Thirty years after Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and Princess Leia destroyed the evil Galactic Empire, killed the Emperor, and redeemed Darth Vader, three new heroes take over (with veterans returning in supporting roles) as they search for the mysterious, nearly extinct Jedi.
Why We're Excited: After the excitement and disappointment of the three "Star Wars" prequels -- the last released in 2005 – "Star Wars" fans are once again excited, now that sci-fi master J. J. Abrams is directing. As an added draw, Abrams co-wrote the script with legendary screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan, who co-wrote "The Empire Strikes Back," the most critically acclaimed of the "Star Wars" films.
